Bakewell Lake USFS Cabin – Misty Fjords, Alaska

The Bakewell Lake Cabin is a remote, rustic public-use USFS cabin nestled in the heart of the Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness in southeast Alaska. Surrounded by towering old-growth forests and pristine waters, this cabin provides access to world-class fishing, paddling, wildlife viewing, and an unforgettable wilderness experience accessible only by floatplane.

Flight & Access Information

  • Flight Access: Accessible by seaplane from Ketchikan, Alaska.

  • Typical Flight Time: ~40–50 minutes depending on weather and conditions.

  • Alternate Access: Some guests arrive by boating to Smeaton Bay (Bakewell Arm) and then paddle/canoe a short distance to the cabin site.

Cabin Amenities & Features

  • Sleeps up to 6 people with two single bunks and two double bunks.

  • Rustic pan-abode cabin with table, benches, shelves, and workspace.

  • Oil stove (requires #1 diesel fuel — not provided).

  • Outhouse toilet.

  • No running water or electricity. Guests should bring their own water or treat water from the lake/creek.

  • 14-foot aluminum skiff with oars (life jackets not included). Guests should bring personal flotation devices.

  • No mooring buoy at the trailhead; floatplane access or boat/canoe is typical.

Activities & Attractions

  • Fishing: Dolly Varden, cutthroat trout, sockeye, pink, chum, and coho salmon in season; possible steelhead near the outlet.

  • Paddling & Boating: Explore the lake by skiff or kayak.

  • Hiking: The Bakewell Lake Trail (≈1 mile) connects the lake to Bakewell Arm and features scenic views and waterfalls.

  • Wildlife Viewing: Sitka blacktail deer, eagles, loons, otters, beavers, and occasional wolves; brown bears in the surrounding wildlands.

  • Relaxation: White-sand beach and serene forest surroundings make for quiet days of rest and reflection.

Important Information

  • Reservations are required through Recreation.gov.

  • Floatplane and gear weight limits apply — plan gear accordingly and consult Family Air at time of booking.

  • This is remote backcountry — prepare for changing weather, bear country safety, and self-sufficiency.

  • Leave No Trace principles apply — pack out all trash and respect the wilderness.

  • You need to book both a pick up and drop off flight

Best Time to Visit Summer months (May through September) offer the best access, fishing, hiking conditions, and wildlife activity. Winter is possible but may be inaccessible if the lake freezes.

Cancellation Policy

You may cancel for any reason up to seven (7) days prior to the date of the tour for a full refund. Any Tours cancelled due to Mechanical Issues, Weather, or bypass of port by the cruise ship will receive a full refund.
