Bakewell Lake USFS Cabin – Misty Fjords National Monument

Bakewell Lake Cabin is a remote, rustic public-use cabin managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Nestled within the Misty Fjords National Monument in the Tongass National Forest, this cabin offers visitors a quiet escape into the heart of Southeast Alaska’s wilderness. Surrounded by steep granite cliffs, dense rainforest, and the calm waters of Bakewell Lake, the area is known for its serene beauty and excellent opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and wildlife viewing.

Location & Access The Bakewell Lake Cabin is situated approximately 35 miles southeast of Ketchikan, Alaska. The cabin is accessible only by floatplane.

Cabin Amenities & Features

  • Sleeps up to 4 people with wooden bunks

  • Wood stove for heat (firewood not provided)

  • Kitchen counter and table with benches

  • Outdoor pit toilet

  • No running water or electricity

  • There is no skiff at this cabin, the USFS has been notified and will hopefully have a replacement out there soon.

  • Visitors must bring their own bedding, cookware, food, and other necessities

Activities & Attractions

  • Photography & Relaxation: Capture the breathtaking scenery and enjoy the peaceful isolation of the Alaskan wilderness.

  • Fishing: Bakewell lake has a salmon ladder that allows pink salmon, silver salmon, and steelhead up into the lake. The lake also has a very healthy population of cutthroat trout that can be caught all summer long. Salmon fishing is between July 15th to the end of September. The skiff is needed to get from the cabin to the outlet creek where the fishing is best. There is a USFS trail that runs from the lake down to the saltwater allowing for limited saltwater fishing from shore.

  • Hunting: Bakewell has many large Muskegs around it that allow for great Blacktail deer hunting from August throughout the fall. Early season the deer are primarily in the higher alpine and begin to go lower as the snow begins to accumulate in the fjords.

Important Information

  • Reservations are required and can be made through Recreation.gov.

  • Visitors should be prepared for rapidly changing weather and pack accordingly.

  • Bear safety precautions are essential; food must be stored properly.

  • Leave No Trace principles should be followed to preserve the natural beauty of the area.

Best Time to Visit Bakewell lake is a great place to visit all summer long, the Lake will usually have ice on it until May 1st and remains open until mid to late November.

You may cancel for any reason up to seven (7) days prior to the date of the tour for a full refund. Any Tours cancelled due to Mechanical Issues, Weather, or bypass of port by the cruise ship will receive a full refund.
